So I'm as happy as anyone for the Twins now that pitcher Francisco Liriano has his Visa and is on his way to pplay for Minnesota. But considering I have friends waiting in line for visas just to get into the US for any kind of work, I can't help but grumble at how much easier it is to get things done when you're famous. Must be nice...

New GM brings hope for Minnesota Twins

Well, the 2007 season was painful for Twins fans, as it saw the end of their 6 year winning streak. They didn't even make it to the playoffs, though maybe that's less traumatic because they never seem to make it all the way to the World Series anyway. It seems that a major reorganization is in order, so Terry Ryan stepped down to be the Senior Advisor to the General Manager, Bill Smith was promoted to Senior Vice President/General Manager, Mike Radcliff was promoted to Vice President/Player Personnel, Rob Antony is now the Assistant General Manager, Deron Johnson is the Director of Scouting, and Brad Steil is the Director of Baseball Operations. The real question is, will all these changes bring improvements, or will they just weaken the team? I guess we'll have to wait until next season to see.

Twins breaking records, and didn't even know it!

How's this for a nice phone call - Rangers broadcaster Eric Nadel, researching opponents, suddenly discovers that Twins' second baseman Luis Castillo has broken two records, and neither he, nor the Twins management, even knew it!

First, he beat Ryan Sandberg's record of 123 consecutive errorless games by a second baseman, and next, he broke Sandberg's record of 584 consecutive chances without an error. Way to go, Castillo... that's the kind of playing the Minnesota Twins needs!

Twins look to tie up Yanks series at home

After a 1-1 series against the White Sox in Chicago, the Twins are looking for victory against the Yankees back at the Metrodome. The Yanks will start without Hideki Matsui after he suffered a minor hamstring injury on Friday - Matsui is out for 15 days on the disabled list. Of course, with the Yankees' depth, this is good news for the Twins but doesn't exactly call for any premature celebration.

Radke Not Yet Retired

Brad Radke has not completely closed the door to the Minnesota Twins and announced his retirement. He is still in talks with the Twins organization to get him signed for his 13th season playing for the Twins. It seems that the Twins are really just wanting to keep Radke as a veteran motivator for the younger players.

Most Valuable Players for single events or short series are sometimes obvious. Over the course of an entire season, there are more likely to be several great candidates to choose from. This year some of the baseball players under consideration were the New York Yankees’ shortstop, Derek Jeter, and David Ortiz, DH for the Boston Red Sox. When the votes were counted, those outstanding athletes came in second and third.

But look who took the top spot as the American League’s MVP for 2006: the Minnesota Twins’ fantastic first baseman, Justin Morneau! And that was also going up against some other fabulous Twins: Joe Mauer and Johan Santana. Congratulations, Justin, Joe and Johan! And thanks from all your fans!

Maybe not rested, maybe calcified

Okay, I guessed wrong on my World Series prediction. Amazing how often I manage that--although one fine day my yearly prediction that the Twins will go all the way will come true.

One safe prediction seems to be that the Major League will keep playing without strikes or lockouts for another five years. The less I hear about that end of the business...the more baseball can feel like a sport and not just a commercial enterprise.

Tigers Rested & Ready for Cardinals

The Tigers had some challenges on the way to the World Series, including regrouping for a final push at the end of the regular season, and dueling with the New York Yankees. But thanks to their sweep of the Oakland A’s, they have had this past week to a) rest up and b) watch the Mets and the Cardinals go at it. I’m guessing they didn’t just lounge around drinking beer during those games either. They must have used every opportunity to study the team they’ll face in the World Series. Now we know that’s going to be the St. Louis Cardinals. I think the Tigers will be more than ready.

The ALDS is quickly slipping away from our beloved Twins. Without delving too depply into what has happened to bring us to this unfortunate place or relying on the A's curse to keep them from pulling this one off, lemme just say this, I certainly hope Brad Radke feels as good as he can because we really need that arm to bring us out of the hole. Only time will tell, but I have my fingers crossed. And hey, the new ballpark will be nice too, nicer with a bang up end of season, but nice anyway

Hanging on by a Thread

Sorry for the long absence. I've been having lots of long conversations with our internet provider over the past few months due to some, let's say "disagreements," over whether or not my internet was working. I won't waste my energy going into it here, but I could start a separate blog about that alone.

I did get to go to the Twins games on Friday and Saturday, which was great. Would have been much better if they'd beat the Chicago White Sox, but I'm watching from home and crossing all my fingers today for another home run by Cuddyer. Wasn't that a beautiful moment?

They're looking good so far today! Maybe I should stay out of the Metrodome more often...

Triple Plays are Helping the Twins

The Minnesota Twins are the new triple play kings with their second one in 13 days! They aren’t doing well in the standings but at least we’re getting to see some entertaining baseball. We did beat the Seattle Mariners thanks to a great long ball by Juan Castro and they really needed that victory.

Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins is making quite a mark on our game this season. He single-handedly dominated the Detroit Tigers pitching seven no-hit innings in a row on Sunday. We won 4-2 and took the series. I am hoping we can see some of the same in our upcoming series against the Texas Rangers. Can anyone tell me how the Texas Rangers are doing so well after years at the bottom of the pile?

The Minnesota Twins lost to the Cleveland Indians Sunday for the third time in this series. I am a little disappointed in our offense so far. We are going to be playing our next three games against the Oakland Athletics who have won seven of their last nine. I hope the Twins can shape up for our first series at home.

Kirby Puckett Passes into Legend

The Minnesota Twins are mourning the recent loss of Kirby Puckett. He died last Monday from complications after a stroke. Friends and fellow players gathered to honor his memory at the stadium that has been called “the house that Puck built”. He was one of the greatest players in the game and he will be sorely missed.

A new stadium may seem like a frivolous expense for a baseball team since it takes tax payers money to build, but we have to consider that there may not be a team in Minnesota if we don’t help make this deal happen soon. The Minnesota Twins have been working on getting an updated stadium for ten years and can finally legally get out of their lease at the Metrodome.

Farm System Showing Promise

The best thing to come out of the Twins’ season is their minor league team the Elizabethton Twins. This season the E-Town Twins won the Appalachian League title, thanks to the help of relief pitcher Alexander Smit. Smit was given the Elizabethton Twins Pitcher of the Year award, because of these blazing stats, 1.97 ERA, opposing hitters only his .157, and struck out 86 batters in 45.2 innings of work. Smit was sent down to E-Town from the Beloit Snappers after going 1-7 in 10 starts, but something clicked and it seems like he found his rhythm. Next season Smit will be starting back up in Beloit again, let’s hope he’ll just keep improving.

Starting Anew in 2006

When the 2006 season comes around expect some new faces to fill the Twins’ roster. The Twins front office has spent this first couple of weeks of the off-season getting rid of spare parts and gearing up for another season. Designated hitter Matthew LeCroy was let go last week and probably won’t come back. Last season he batted .260 with 17 home runs and 50 RBIs, and you have to look for better production from a DH. Right handed pitcher Joe Mays was let go as well, after general manager Terry Ryan decided not to accept Mays’s $8.5 million option. Mays has been a big disappointment with only 18 wins since 2001, and an ERA of 5.65 this season.

Since the Twins are out of it this season, it’s time to look forward to next season, and manager Ron Gardenhire is taking these last few games to see who is still giving it their all. Michael Cuddyer is one that hasn’t stop playing. Wednesday night Cuddyer had 3 doubles, 1 home run, and 4 RBIs, in the 10-4 win over the Oakland Athletics. “Cuddyer killed us all year. He was pretty much a one-man wrecking crew,” Oakland A's manager Ken Macha said.

How can you be the hero of the game when you go 1 for 5, including a strikeout in the 8^th with a man on third? Easy -- hit a 2-RBI double in the 10^th inning to push your team ahead for a 3-1 win. Nick Punto took his time making an impact on the game late Monday night against the Kansas City Royals, but all you need is one swing of the bat. With the Minnesota Twins' playoff hopes dwindling, it’s good to see that players are still stepping up to try and win.

Johan Santana is getting paid to what he does best, and is getting outs one at a time. In the beginning of the season Santana still collected some wins but wasn’t nearly as dominate as he has been in his last several outings. Santana pitched through is third complete game last night and ended up with his second no hitter of the season. Santana is on fire right now.

Mays Shutout

With the help of a four-run surge in the sixth, Joe Mays completed the 10th game of his pitching career on a high note. Racking up another shutout since his shutout of the Red Sox in 2002, Mays allowed only six hits throughout his game. Michael Cuddyer helped out by an RBI double in the sixth to lead into a four-run inning.

Mays has had quite a few struggles through the last few years and is finally coming back to the form he had in 2001. Now after elbow inflammation, Tommy John surgery to replace ligament, and thorough rehabilitation, Mays is rebuilding his former reputation.

Twins Staduim Delay

The bill to start production on a new stadium for the Twins has been delayed. The reason for the delay has been the addition of a possible referendum to the bill. Many were opposed to this addition on account that it would most likely end up being a deal killer. As of now, no referendum has been added, but the bill process through the House has yet again slowed down.

The Twins have been again pushing to have a new stadium built for Minnesota. On previous occasions of trying to have the bill passed, the franchise was not prepared to undertake the task. This was tried in 2001 and 2002 but insufficient funding killed off the prospect. Senator Steve Kelly has been backing the bill that has just taken another ride through senate.

“My job is to be an advocate for this solution, but also to be an advocate for the fact that we have to have some solution to the ballpark dilemma, so I'll be trying to explain to the members the virtues of this solution and trying to persuade them that now is the time to act, because we won't get this behind us until we actually build a ballpark.”

In a 10-9 slugfest, the Minnesota Twins came out on top over the Kansas City Royals. Lew Ford ended the 9-9 tie that took the game into an extra inning by a single. This makes a sweep of the series over the Royals.

The Royals have been doing pretty poorly so far; racking up a record of 5-11. The Twins on the other hand have won their last two games and have a record of 10-6. Minnesota will battle Kansas City again next week after a series with Detroit.

Silva Ready for Return

Carlos Silva looks like he will be ready to return to the mound coming in the next few weeks. After a very prolific five-inning start with the Class A Beloit, Silva feels pretty positive about his return on Monday.

Mays face Tigers in Return

Joe Mays may have already made a relief appearance this season, but the pitcher's long road back from elbow surgery will culminate Tuesday night.

Mays will make his first start since Aug. 29, 2003, when the Twins open a three-game set vs. the Tigers. The right-hander had a partial ligament replacement operation Sept. 11, 2003, and spent all of 2004 on the disabled list recovering.

Expected to be the fifth starter and skipped until April 16 because of Minnesota's use of a four-man rotation to start the season, Mays was moved up after third starter Carlos Silva went down with a torn meniscus in his right knee.

In a three-inning relief appearance Friday vs. the White Sox, Mays gave up one run on three hits.

Opposing Mays will be Detroit left-hander Mike Maroth.

Twins win series over Mariners

Matthew Lecroy provided in the fourth inning by slamming in a three-run homer. The Twins also held rookie Jeremy Reed to a 0-11 game. Reed is between two power hitters in the batting order and fell through hard.

Many will be watching and waiting on what becomes of OF prospect Michael Restovich, who is out of options. Restovich hasn't helped himself by having a slow spring at the plate. His ability to throw has also been restricted because he's coming back from a broken right collarbone suffered in the offseason. The 26-year-old, who can only play corner outfield spots, has long had upside as a power hitter but has never made the successful jump to stay in the big leagues. Many believe Restovich could start on other teams and if the Twins can get a decent offer, a trade at the end of camp could be possible.

C.J. Nitkowski

C.J. Nitkowski, formerly with the Braves and the New York Yankees, was signed earlier this off season to a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins. This does not mean that he was set to this contract.

Former Detroit 3B Eric Munson, a non-roster invite, has impressed his new club with his work ethic and willingness to help out any way he can. Munson, who began his career as a catcher, arrived early and caught for pitchers in the bullpen. Considered a below-average infielder defensively, the 27-year-old has sought coaches and is doing extra work and drills to improve at third. He could be on the opening day roster as a key lefthanded power bat off the bench.

Mauer Out and Back

After being taken off the line on Monday, Joe Mauer was a little stressed that he may be taken out for a while. This was due to excessive soreness he was feeling in his right knee. During catching in the bullpen, Mauer reported soreness on the knee that he had repaired. But, after a few days and a few ice packs, the swelling has receded and Mauer is happy to be right as rain for more Spring Training.

"They told me [the prognosis] yesterday and I felt pretty good about it. But it's nice to see the young man come in with the swelling gone and feeling a lot better."

Terry Tiffee’s Trials

As a member of the Minnesota Twins, Tiffee was only able to take part in a total of 17 games. He did make a fairly good mark for himself, but on a rash, stupid decision ended his stint during the season. During a game against Detroit, Tiffee decided to try to deck catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez. Not exactly the best of decisions on account of not making “Pudge” budge at all. In other words, Tiffee might as well of run into a wall, because he dislocated his shoulder and was out most of the rest of the season.

"If you don't win and you come out broken, yes, you did it wrong. That's probably pretty much a good barometer. He came out broke. Maybe he should try it different next time."

Now, Tiffee is back but he has a lot of competition and a lot to prove. Most likely, he will not fall under the roster and move down to Triple-A for a season.

Johan Santana Stays

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins pitcher Johan Santana didn't need flowers or chocolate for Valentine's Day. He'd rather have the security that comes with a multi-year contract.

That's what the American League's reigning Cy Young Award winner received Monday when he and Minnesota agreed to a four-year contract that avoids arbitration. Terms of the deal were not revealed by the club, but the Associated Press reported it to be worth $40 million. It is still pending until Santana passes a physical scheduled for Monday afternoon.

"I feel good. I feel better than ever," Santana said by phone from Fort Myers, Fla., late Monday morning. "It's something we were looking for."

Santana was 20-6 with an AL-leading 2.61 ERA in 2004, which included a dominating 13-0 record and 1.21 ERA after the All-Star break. He also led the league with 265 strikeouts and was unanimously elected as winner of the AL Cy Young Award.

The 25-year-old left-hander, who earned $1.6 million last season after losing his arbitration case, was scheduled for an arbitration hearing on Tuesday. He was seeking $6.8 million while the Twins countered with a $5 million offer.

Silva Stays

After last season’s play, pitcher Carlos Silva is going to stay with the Minnesota Twins. Racking up 14 wins, Silva proved that he was very necessary part of the starting rotation. Being a first year starter, Minnesota has come onto a goldmine.

Silva’s contract as of now is for two years with the option for 2007 worth $5.05 million. Nothing compared to a salary like that of Roger Clemens, but still a pretty penny for the second year in the majors.

During last season, Silva had worked his way up to the number three spot in rotation.

Glancing Forward

There have been many disputed facts on who will start when the season open anew, either Brad Radke or Johan Santana. Santana, who had a very good season last year, was awarded the AL Cy Young Award. But, Santana will not be starting on opening day. This honor was given to Brad Radke.

"I was definitely surprised. I figured [Santana] would definitely be the guy after the season he had last year. It's definitely an honor. I'm excited. I'm glad they made that decision. Johan will have a lot of Opening Day starts in his career.”

The Twins have also made a few offseason acquisitions. Mike Redmond, former member of the Florida Marlins, signed a two-year contract with the Twins. Also, Eric Munson came into the fold after being a Tiger since 2000. Munson is on a minor league contract for now, but will be competing for a spot in the majors.

Shortstop up for grabs

For the Twins this coming spring, all positions are pretty much solidified expect for the shortstop position. There are four possible canidates for the job. The list includes Augie Ojeda, Jason Bartlett, Juan Castro, and Nick Punto.

At the age of 30, Ojeda was brought up from triple-A ball last august do to injuries in the Twins roster. Ojeda only played in 30 games with a .339 batting average

Then there is 25-year-old rookie Jason Bartlett who is in desperate need of some experience. Barlett went 1 for 12 with the Twins last year, but batted .331 in triple-A.

Castro was acquired from Reds, and inked himself to a two-year contract with the Twins. Castro has been in the big leagues for 10 years now and has a career batting average of .226, though he is known for a sturdy glove.

Our last finalist is Punto, who is probably the best for the job, and has the most skills than any for the position. At 27 year of age, he has had problem with injuries, but if he can stay in good health I don't see why the job wouldn't be given to him.

Rivas recovering in Winter Leagues

With the Latin American Winter Leagues in their final month of their regular seasons, several Twins are continuing to keep their skills sharp in the offseason.

Minnesota second baseman Luis Rivas began playing for the Magallanes club in his native Venezuela after recovering from October arthroscopic elbow surgery that removed bone chips. Riva was 3-for-17 (.176) through just four games, and missed a couple of days when he twisted his ankle.

But Twins assistant general manager Bill Smith, who recently returned from a trip through Latin America, was impressed when he got a look at Rivas.

"He looked great," Smith said Friday. "I saw him two weeks ago and he probably lost 10 pounds."

Rivas batted .256 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs for the Twins in 2004, but the club indicated its concern during the Winter Meetings that the 25-year-old might have hit a plateau offensively. He could be in danger of losing his spot in the starting lineup next season. If Michael Cuddyer doesn't replace Corey Koskie at third base, he could replace Rivas at second base in 2005.

Twins setup reliever Juan Rincon is gearing up to play for the Lara club in the Venezuelan League. Rincon has started working out and will try to get some innings to qualify for the playoffs.

"Juan and his agent felt it was important for his conditioning program," Smith said.

One pitcher who won't be appearing in winter baseball action is AL Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana. After considering letting him pitch a few innings for Magallanes, the Twins ultimately requested that he not participate.

"He had a phenomenal year and he pitched a lot of innings," Smith said. "We felt strongly it was time to shut down and rest. He's had a lot of activity this winter. It's been a whirlwind month. He has a chance to spend time with his family, which he was excited about."

Two Twins prospects, third baseman Terry Tiffee and pitcher Willie Eyre, finished playing with the Aragua club Dec. 1. Tiffee batted .293 in 10 games and Eyre was 5-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 13 games.

Another prospect who stopped playing Dec. 1 was left-handed pitcher Francisco Liriano, who was in the Dominican Republic with Escogido. Liriano, who came over with Joe Nathan from the Giants organization in the A.J. Pierzynski trade, was recently added to the Twins' 40-man roster.

The 22-year-old, who split the regular season between Class A Fort Myers and Double-A New Britain, was 1-3 with a 4.60 ERA in five games this winter with a solid final outing. Many in the organization like Liriano's potential.

"We wanted him to rest for Spring Training," Smith said. "He had a long season and pitched more innings than he had in his life. He was very impressive. He has a good frame and a good arm. He could have a bright future."

Santana Captures AL Cy Young

For much of the 2004 season, Twins pitcher Johan Santana didn't just beat opposing hitters. More often than not, he dominated, overwhelmed and even owned them.

On Thursday, Santana won the American League Cy Young Award in the same impressive fashion.

Although some expected the balloting to be a tight, two-man race between Santana and Boston's Curt Schilling, it proved not to be close at all. Members of the Baseball Writers Association of America selected Santana for the award unanimously, giving him all 28 first-place votes for a total of 140 points.

"I'm surprised it was a unanimous decision," Santana said by phone from his home in Venezuela. "I thought it would be a tough race. Curt is one of the best."

Schilling, who received 27 of 28 second-place votes, was a distant runner-up with 82 points in a 5-3-1 tabulation system. It was the seventh time in AL history a pitcher won unanimously, and the first since Boston's Pedro Martinez in 2000.

"It's a tribute to his accomplishments this year," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said of Santana. "It was obvious people in the industry respected what he accomplished. It was quite a feat."

Santana was 20-6 with an AL-leading 2.61 ERA this season and was a major force behind the Twins' third straight AL Central championship. The left-hander also recorded 265 strikeouts, holding opposing hitters to a .192 batting average and posting a 0.92 WHIP -- all AL-best numbers. He trailed only 21-game winner Schilling in victories and was second to Chicago's Mark Buehrle in innings pitched with 228.

What truly made it the "Summer of Santana" was an 18-2 record and 1.36 ERA over his final 22 starts while not allowing more than three runs in a game over that stretch. Challenging hitters with a well-controlled fastball, a tough slider and a deadly changeup, he didn't lose a game after July 11, going 13-0 with a 1.21 ERA following the All-Star break.

Rincon Tips His Hat to Yankees

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins manager Ron Gardenhire could only remember two times when Juan Rincon failed to hold down the opponent when he needed. Unfortunately, the second time Rincon didn't will be remembered more than all the times he did.

Maybe not, but a lot of Twins were trying to stand beside him.

Maybe not shame, but there's at least shock. Rincon threw three hitless innings against the Yankees in New York, including four strikeouts in two perfect innings of Game 2 with the game tied. He hadn't given up a run since the Twins were in New York in the last week of the regular season and he hadn't given up more than two hits in an outing since Aug. 6.

That's why whether Johan Santana went five innings or six, manager Ron Gardenhire planned to hand the eighth to Rincon.

The first time Gardenhire recalled was a July 22 game at home against Tampa Bay. Like Saturday, he entered the eighth inning with a 5-1 lead. Like Saturday, he gave up four runs to tie the game. All of them came on Rocco Baldelli's grand slam following two walks and a single.

On Saturday, he came out aggressively, putting Gary Sheffield in an 0-2 hole before Sheffield singled through the left side. With the potential tying run still three batters away, his outing fell apart, though it didn't feel like it.

Rincon threw three straight balls to Hideki Matsui before walking him on five pitches. Bernie Williams' line-drive single to right-center plated Sheffield and brought that potential tying run to the plate. Jorge Posada took five consecutive pitches from Rincon to bring the count full before Rincon induced a swing and miss.

That was his only out pitch of the night, but it was his most important. It's the pitch he went back to when he had a 2-2 count on Ruben Sierra.

Sierra put a home run swing on it, sending it soaring towards the folded-in football seats in right field. By the time it hit, the Metrodome crowd had been brought to near complete silence.

Juan Rincon gave up five home runs in 77 regular-season outings. Two of those home runs came on 2-2 counts, the same count on which Sierra hit his game-tying homer Saturday. Seven of his 16 career regular-season home runs allowed came on either 2-2 or 3-2 counts.

When the Yankees won Game 2 off of Nathan, the debate turned to why Gardenhire allowed Nathan to throw a third inning. Here, there wasn't much to debate. From the team's standpoint, there wasn't much to blame, either.

Rincon was clearly, understandably distraught over the ordeal. The 25-year-old who pitches like he's at least five years more experienced, spent a long time in the clubhouse before returning to his locker with a few reporters still waiting. By then, he had calmly come to grips with his situation.

It's the same thing he heard from one player after another after the game. It's what he'll likely remember as much as Sierra's shot.

Twins Lose the Battle in Equalizer

NEW YORK -- What did you get when a thrilling Twins comeback met head-on with Yankee Stadium mystique?

Emotional whiplash.

Torii Hunter broke a 5-5 tie with a home run in the top of the 12th inning. But before Minnesota could leave town with two road wins in the American League Division Series, the Yankees scored two in the bottom of the 12th off closer Joe Nathan to escape with a stunning 7-6 Game 2 victory on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

The best-of-five series is now split, 1-1, as play shifts to Minnesota for Friday's Game 3.

Nathan, who already had two scoreless innings in the book, went out instead of rookie Jesse Crain or struggling lefty J.C. Romero. The right-hander retired his first batter but then threw nine straight balls. He issued back-to-back one-out walks to Miguel Cairo and Derek Jeter.

A 1-1 pitch to Alex Rodriguez was launched to the wall in left field for an RBI ground-rule double. Gary Sheffield was intentionally walked to load the bases and Romero was called in from the bullpen.

Hideki Matsui flied Romero's first pitch into shallow right field. As Jeter tagged up, Jacque Jones caught the ball and fired to Matthew LeCroy cutting off from first base. Jeter slid home safely ahead of LeCroy's relay to the plate.

Suddenly, leaving town with a split wasn't quite as satisfying...

When the two teams head to the Metrodome for Friday's Game 3, Minnesota will try to avoid repeating last year's ALDS outcome. In that series, the club split the first two games in the Bronx and felt almost giddy. Then it dropped two in a row at home to be eliminated from the postseason...

Especially after the way the Twins battled back. Especially because they knew they had already gotten the best of Mariano Rivera and beat him.

Minnesota trailed, 5-3, in the eighth when Yankees setup man Tom Gordon put two runners on with one out to hasten Mariano Rivera's arrival from the bullpen.

Rivera, one of the postseason's all-time best relievers, converted 30 of his previous 32 save opportunities in the playoffs. In last year's ALDS vs. Minnesota, he recorded a pair of dominant two-inning saves. In the 2004 regular season, he was 53-for-57 in save chances.

This time, the Twins made this usually surest of moves backfire on the Yankees.

Justin Morneau pulled Rivera's first pitch to right field for an RBI single that scored Jones. The next batter, Corey Koskie, battled in an eight-pitch showdown and finally succeeded by lofting a ground-rule double to short left field that scored Hunter and tied the game at 5.

Twins starter Brad Radke gave up five runs, including three home runs, through 6 1/3 innings. But the bullpen trio of Grant Balfour, Juan Rincon and Nathan shut the Yankees down for 4 2/3 innings.

But they were still left one bullet short from putting New York down, maybe for good.

Twins drop series in Chicago

CHICAGO -- Any fan that believes the remainder of the Twins schedule is meaningless didn't walk into manager Ron Gardenhire's office Wednesday after a 7-6 loss to the
White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

In the bottom of the ninth, Joe Roa (2-3) gave up Wilson Valdez's leadoff single before Aaron Rowand's sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Willie Harris walked to set up the winning hit, a Paul Konerko RBI single into left field.

While his team has already clinched the AL Central Division, Gardenhire hasn't stopped his focus on fundamentals, making plays and making pitches. That's why he couldn't hide his disappointment that a breakdown in all three categories cost Minnesota the game -- its second-straight defeat to Chicago...

The Twins aren't exactly bowling teams over as they trek toward their third straight AL Central crown, but they have been remarkably efficient.
That was the case again Saturday night, as the Twins came up with just enough offense and turned in yet another stellar bullpen performance to beat the Tigers, 3-2, in front of 28,931 at Comerica Park...

...And why shouldn't this club have a swagger to it here in the stretch run? The Twins are 8-1 in their last nine games against Central Division opponents, making sure the pennant chase really isn't much of a chase at all.

"If we keep winning, no one can catch us," Gardenhire said. "We know that."

Facing the facts

So, yes, the Twins are most likely going to the post-season, and we'll see how far we get. It's not going to cut it losing to the Royals and other spoiler teams. It happens, I know, but it's not good enough. Now comes that crucial time of planning and preparing our cards for next season. It seems like a tough decision to make, when to give up and start thinking farther ahead.

With so many young players and several injuries (Rivas and Ojeda), figuring out new talent and working out a roster that will work best. For example, Cuddyer seems pretty comfortable at 2nd standing in for Koskie. Also, these younger players are often more effective batters against veteran pitchers, especially late in the season, so it may do us some good to be rotating them in at a time like now.

Should be interesting to see how all this logistical stuff unfolds...

Also, Twins are playing RIGHT NOW against the Orioles, so...why are you reading this?

Twins head to Texas

The Twins are playing an impressive stretch of baseball, with wins in six of their last seven games against the Yankees and Indians.
But you'll have to forgive the Rangers if they haven't stopped to take notice -- they've been too busy taking eight of their last nine.

Temperatures will rise in Arlington as baseball's two hottest teams meet in a four-game series starting Monday.

Texas is coming off sweeps of Tampa Bay and Cleveland, and took two of three from Kansas City. Friday the 13th seemed to put a hex on Rangers opponents -- from that day on, Texas has outscored its competition, 55 to 34.

"Texas is playing really well, so it's going to be a fun week," Twins third baseman Corey Koskie said.

The Rangers, who haven't faced the Twins this year, aren't likely to make things easy. They are deadlocked in baseball's tightest division race and need every win possible.

Entering Monday, Texas trails Oakland by just a half-game in the American League West along with Anaheim.

Minnesota, meanwhile, leads the AL Central by seven games after sweeping the Indians at home. The Twins' offense was in fine form in the series, outscoring Cleveland, 20-5.

The Twins hope to maintain the same production against the Rangers and plan on making slight adjustments to do so.

"We know in Texas it's hot down there and humid," Twins outfielder Torii Hunter said. "We're going to try to not do too much in batting practice and early work, and try to save our energy for the dog days of August."

The Twins will send Johan Santana to the mound in the series opener against ex-teammate Kenny Rogers.

Santana has vaulted to the forefront of Cy Young contention, five straight games. Since the All-Star break, he has gone 6-0 with a 1.82 ERA and held opponents to a .160 batting average. He is also 11-2 with a 1.73 ERA in 14 starts since June 9.

Given that success, it is not surprising that he doesn't plan on changing his approach, even against the Rangers' powerful lineup.

"I just do my thing," Santana said. "We haven't faced them, so we'll see. It's going to be a challenge and it's going to be a good matchup."

Rogers has won his past two outings, but has been inconsistent overall in August, posting a 6.75 ERA in four starts.

Last season, the veteran left-hander made 31 starts for Minnesota.

"He's a great pitcher," Santana said. "He's all about control. He can throw strikes and he can make a lot of plays. We have to make sure we stay aggressive with him."

Carlos Silva is scheduled to face Texas right-hander Chris Young, a callup from Triple-A Oaklahoma, on Tuesday; Kyle Lohse is expected to go against right-hander Ryan Drese on Wednesday and Terry Mulholland is slated to square off against righty Mickey Callaway in the finale on Thursday.

"We're just going to try and be aggressive and not let them get to the top of their game," Santana said. "Hopefully we can get some wins over there."

Twins overpowered by Mariners

The Twins dropped the series opener in Seattle last night, despite deep hits by Corey Koskie, Lew Ford and Torii Hunter. Mulholland allowed a pair of two-run homers in the bottom of the first. One was by Edgar Martinez, who announced his retirement Monday effective at the end of the season.

Tonight Brad Radke will occupy the hill for the Twins in the second of three games at Safeco in Seattle. The right-hander will try and keep things headed in the right direction - we lead the AL Central, but have lost five of our last six games. We'll have to do better to keep our lead.

Twins drop game to Angels, 8-3

As the title says, the Twins lost yesterday to Anaheim, 8-3. It's only our third loss in the last sixteen games. So Mulholland wasn't on last night...I guess I can let that slide, it happens. But Crain made a great debut despite the Guerrero hit and all. He came into the game 5 runs behind, that's gotta be a shitty way to start your first Major League game.

Grant Balfour's on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his shoulder, so don't expect to see him for a bit. THe decision was retroactive, since he hasn't played since July 25th. So he'll be eligible again on August 10th.

Silva Starts

Right-hander Carlos Silva will make the start for the Twins against Anaheim's John Lackey.

Silva pitched well in his first encounter with the Angels this year on April 30. He allowed only two runs on seven hits and two walks over 7 1/3 innings to earn the win.

The Twins enter the series on a remarkable hot streak, having won 11 of their past 13 games. Minnesota leads second-place Chicago by five games in the American League Central.

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Doug Mientkiewicz accepts his role as trade bait. "I'm like a ship with no harbor right now," said Mientkiewicz, who has been told by "people in the organization" that he will be traded, possibly by the July 31 non-waiver deadline, so Justin Morneau can be the everyday first baseman. "I know his name's being mentioned by everybody," said manager Ron Gardenhire. "I've already talked to Mint. You know his name's going to be out there. If something does happen, and he does get traded, you can't control that."

we need something to strengthen us down the stretch, because eventually the sox will get frank and maggs back. we just have to hope to be enough games ahead at that point.

Beginning tonight the Twins will defend their lead in the AL Central against the White Sox, #2. It's a 3-game series and we hold a 2 game lead right now (54-44, 52-43) over Chicago.

We took a 3-gamer 2-1 against the Orioles over the weekend. Good work, Twins!

Paul Molitor was inducted into the Hall of Fame yesterday - 3,000 hits ain't too shabby. Congrats Paul - it's an honor you deserve.

Forgot to mention I was going on vacation :-/ Took a short trip to Florida, but now I'm back.

Since I've been away the Twins suffered through a 1-3 Series against KC. Last night, we beat the Tigers - look for a sweep tonight. Jose Offerman and Terry Mulholland were hot last night - tonight Kyle Lohse will face a struggling Jeremy Bonderman.

Should be a good one, folks!

In other news, we dropped a series against Detroit 1-3, leaving us in a lull for the All-Star break. Hopefully we can get our heads back together in time to make easy work of Kansas City. 4-game series starts in KC on Thursday.

welcome to my new minnesota twins board! this is a sort of experiment to see if i get any response and also an outlet for my passion for baseball and especially the twins. i'm a 20 yr old anthropology and sociology student from duluth, minnesnowta, and i have to say i'm fascinated by the quickly growing blog community and culture. so this is as much an academic endeavor as a fanatical one, you might say.

anyhow, just saying hi for now, i'll add some more posts following the twins in the next few days.
